(1) cover (2—7) propositions

Slanted Magazine asked me to create the cover for their Sex issue. Known for their minimalistic covers, it felt like a perfect fit. The challenge, however, was figuring out how to approach a topic as vast and diverse as… sex.

One thing is sex—and I’m not one to shy away from it—but another is navigating censorship when comes time to promote and share the magazine (hello, Instagram). I had to strike a balance.

My main concept was this: when it comes to sex—be it gay, straight, male, female, or non-binary—one thing we all have in common is… anus. Focusing on it allowed me to avoid gender and genitals. That’s why most of the characters are simply showing their asses. I also chose to include three characters, moving beyond the idea of sex confined to a relationship. It’s broader: it could represent three solo-sex acts, group sex, or even the same character in three different positions.

The final cover isn’t my personal favorite, though I’m still very happy with it. I would have preferred one without the eyes, with a subtle dot representing the anus. I found those covers more subversive and abstract. My favorite is actually the last one—it’s raw. But hey, some like it raw.
